Maurizio Sarri claimed his first top-flight league title on Serie A matchday 36 as Juventus won 2-0 versus Sampdoria. Now, with nine straight Serie A Scudetti won, Juventus will aim to finish out the season with two more wins.
The Bianconeri are preparing for their Champions League second leg match against Lyon and need to overturn a one-goal deficient. Sarri will want his team to continue their great play in Serie A as a warm-up for the Champions League restart.
Cagliari have not defeated Juventus since the 2009-10 season. Nineteen games in all competitions have since past between Cagliari’s last win and now.
Juventus claimed a 4-0 victory against Cagliari the last time the teams played in Serie A. All four goals came in the second half as Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick. Gonzalo Higuain added a fourth goal for the Bianconeri.
Sarri’s team may be the Serie A title winners, but they are in poor form. Juventus have won just twice in the last six games in Serie A. They have posted a 2W-2D-2L record over the course of their last six league games. It is safe to say they limped across the title line.
Cagliari have no worries of relegation going into the last two games of the campaign. The Islanders have no chance at making Europe either. Just like Juventus, Cagliari have no pressure heading into the game.
In spite of Juventus winning the league title, they have only posted the league’s fourth-best away points total. Their last three Serie A games all finished without a victory. Still, Juventus have posted a +6 away goal difference.
Cagliari are winless in their last four home matches. They are +2 in goal difference at home having scored 30 goals and allowing 28.
Sarri does have a few injuries on his hands at the Allianz Arena. Douglas Costa is now ruled out for the rest of the season The Brazilian’s time at Juventus is sure to be running out as he continues to fail to live up to his potential.
Meriah Demiral is back from injury and was in the team for the win against Sampdoria. He didn’t get onto the pitch but having him available will be beneficial going forward. Centre-back Giorgio Chiellini is still out of action as is Sami Khedira.
In spite of the injuries and having won the Scudetto, Juventus should claim a victory on Sunday night. Like their previous match this season, Wednesday night’s match should see both teams score goals.
