Champions League Qualification on the Line at Stamford Bridge
4213

We have reached the final day of the English Premier League season and there is plenty to be decided. In terms of Champions League qualification there is a big match at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The hosts come into the match in 4th place on 63 points, behind Manchester United on goal difference and in front of Leicester by one point. The visitors are in 6th place on 59 points and a win will see them secure that position.

Chelsea travelled to Liverpool on Wednesday night knowing that a win would have seen them move into third place and secure Champions League football. However, the defending was once again brought into question as they ended up losing the game 5-3. It was only the introduction of Christian Pulisic that saved them from a severe defeat.

That result means since the resumption of the Premier League following lockdown Chelsea have won 5 of their 8 Premier League games. There have been 3 defeats but all of them have come away from home.

Trends show that in each of their last 5 home games in the Premier League, Chelsea have managed to win at both half time and full time. The Blues have been strong at Stamford Bridge and have remained undefeated in 50 of their most recent 60 home games in all competitions. Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in 3 of their last 4 home Premier League matches and have won by 2 or more goals in 3 of their last 5.

Wolves travel to London having defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 at home on Monday night. That was their third successive game without defeat following the 3-0 win over Everton and the draw at Burnley. Having returned to action following the lockdown, Wolves have remained undefeated in 6 of their 8 games, all of which have been in the league.

They have managed to keep a clean sheet in 9 of their last 13 Premier League matches but have prevented the opposition from scoring only twice in their last 7 away games in all competitions. However, Wolves have shown they are capable of scoring goals away from home and have found the back of the net at least once in 6 of their previous 7 away matches.

Team news and Chelsea continue without the injured trio of Billy Gilmour, Charly Musonda and N’Golo Kante. Christian Pulisic is sure to start after his appearance off the bench against Liverpool.

Wolves have no injury or suspension concerns. They could make a couple of changes to the starting XI from the match against Crystal Palace with Romain Saiss and Neto coming into the team.

As the home team, Chelsea will fancy their chances of taking maximum points and securing a Champions League place for next season. However, do not expect them to keep a clean sheet and we should see both teams scoring in this game.
