Watford aiming to secure top-flight safety against Arsenal

Arsenal welcome Watford to the Emirates Stadium for their final Premier League game of the 2019/20 season, with the Hornets needing to avoid defeat at the very least.

Eighteenth-place Watford find themselves just inside the bottom three, although they are level with seventeenth-place Aston Villa on 34 points.

However, their inferior goal difference means that even a win on Sunday may not be enough to keep them in the top flight.

Watford have only managed to win two of their eight games since the restart, while five defeats saw the club part ways with manager Nigel Pearson last week.

Under the guidance of caretaker boss Hayden Mullins, the Hornet were thrashed 4-0 by Manchester City last time out.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been extremely hit and miss since the lay-off, and this has left them sitting tenth – five points behind seventh-place Tottenham.

Eye-catching victories over Wolves and Liverpool in the league were followed by a hugely impressive FA Cup semi-final win against Man City, but Mikel Arteta’s men have dropped far too many points lately.

Either side of the Liverpool victory, the Gunners lost to Spurs and Aston Villa, meaning the only way the club can qualify for Europe next season is to win the FA Cup.

Of course, it has been a campaign of transition for the North London club. But Arteta will still be looking for his players to finish the season on a high.

Thankfully for Arsenal, Watford come into this game having lost their previous five away games in all competitions.

Head-to-head: Watford held Arsenal to a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture back in August, although the Gunners have definitely enjoyed playing against the Hornets in recent years.

Arsenal had claimed three straight victories over Watford before this season’s draw, racking up an aggregate scoreline of 6-0 along the way.

Team news: The home side are still without first-choice goalkeeper Bernd Leno, while Gabriel Martinelli, Mesut Ozil, Calum Chambers, Shkodran Mustafi, and Pablo Mari will also miss Arsenal’s final game.

As for Watford, Isaac Success, Gerard Deulofeu, Daryl Janmaat, and Etien Capoue are all sidelined for the trip to the Emirates.

Needless to say, Watford will be fighting for their lives on Sunday. But Arsenal’s superiority is like to shine through.

Forebet predicts that Arsenal will score over 2.5 goals and keep a clean sheet on their way to victory.
