Atalanta could have their best-ever Serie A finish in 2019-20 as just one point separates Gian Piero Gasperini’s team from second place. La Dea drew 2-2 with Juventus at the weekend and are the most in-form team in Serie A.
With the Champions League restarting in August, Atalanta could be a dark horse to win the competition. Atalanta are unbeaten in 14 straight games in all competitions. In spite of a lack of finances at the club, Gasperini has built one of the best sides in all of Europe.
Brescia are firmly in the relegation zone and need nine points to get out of the bottom three. With 18 points left available in the Serie A season, they can still escape the relegation zone. Yet, back to back wins and inconsistent form has Brescia looking like a side ready for the drop.
When these teams met earlier this season, Atalanta thrashed Brescia at the Mario Rigamonti Stadium, 3-0. Mario Pasalic scored twice and Josip Ilicic scored a late third. The match between the sides was their first since 2005-06 Serie B campaign.
Atalanta have scored more goals than any other Serie A team with 87. They simply outscore other teams in matches and remarkably have outscored first-placed Juventus by 20 strikes.
Gasperini has three players in the Serie A top 10 goal scorers table. Luis Muriel (17), Duvan Zapata (15), and Ilicic (15) have been absolutely unreal. Gasperini has helped breathe life into all three players’ careers.
Brescia have the second-worst Serie A away points total. They have won just three times while losing 11 matches on the road. Diego Lopez’s team have struggled to get goals on the road with a mere 11 going in to the old onion bag. Meanwhile, 34 away goals have been tallied by opponents.
Atalanta are nine points back of Juventus but even with 18 points still up for grabs, are highly unlikely to catch the league leaders. Still, finishing second is a tremendous feat especially with Atalanta’s meagre finances.
Gasperini has no new injury news and goes into round 33 against Brescia with a fully fit squad. Lopez, on the other hand, has two players set to miss the fixture. Dimitri Bisoli has a tendon problem keeping him out at the moment and Andrea Cistana has an ankle injury.
With Atalanta flying high in all competitions and coming off of a 2-2 away draw to Juventus, it is difficult to see Brescia getting a win away. La Dea are the in-form Serie A team and have eyes on finishing runner-up in the league.
