Friday evening’s hosts, Atletico Madrid, gained a valuable point in a 2-2 draw away from home at Barcelona on Tuesday night and it’s a quick turnaround for Atletico Madrid as they prepare for the visit of relegation-threatened Mallorca at their Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.
Atletico won’t mind the fixtures coming thick and fast though especially as they’re in top form right now, having put together a decent looking 11-match unbeaten sequence in La Liga which also includes winning four of their last five matches overall in the Spanish top flight.
Recent wins against Osasuna 5-0, Real Valladolid 1-0, Levante 1-0 and a 2-1 victory over Deportivo Alaves have helped Diego Simeone’s side into 3rd place and with a five-point buffer between themselves and 5th placed Villarreal, the hosts now look set for a Champions League spot next season.
Form at home has also been impressive as Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their last eight matches (winning six of these), while the bigger picture shows that the hosts have suffered just one defeat at home all season.
Onto Mallorca, and the visitors currently occupy third from bottom and a place in the relegation zone of La Liga ahead of this extremely tough trip to Madrid to take on their Friday’s hosts, Atletico.
Mallorca will head into this upcoming clash against the high-flying Atletico Madrid side in a much better frame of mind following their 5-1 thrashing of Celta Vigo on Tuesday night, but nevertheless, the visitors still look to have their work cut out as they’ve lost four of their last six matches overall.
The visitors have managed to pick up just one away win throughout the whole of this campaign to date which was gained in a 2-1 win at 16th placed Eibar, but otherwise it’s been a bleak period for Mallorca on their travels as they’ve lost 13 of their 16 matches away from home so far this term.
In addition, Mallorca also possess the joint-worst defensive record away from home (along with Deportivo Alaves), with both teams shipping a total of 36 goals to date on the road this season.
Atletico Madrid tend not to score too many at home (and concede even less), but given the nature of Mallorca’s sieve-like defence, the hosts should put a few past the visitors on their way to collecting all three points.
