Koln and Fortuna Dusseldorf set for big Rhine Derby match on Sunday

Ten points separate Koln and Fortuna Dusseldorf in the Bundesliga table with Rhine Derby set for this Sunday.

Markus Gisdol’s Goats are comfortable in midtable and just six points off of the top six. After last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Mainz, it is unlikely that Koln can reach the Europa League qualification places.

The Goats were on track to win 2-0 versus Mainz when they fell apart and allowed the visitors to score two goals in the final 29 minutes. Now, the Goats host 16th-place Fortuna Dusseldorf, a club fighting for their Bundesliga safety.

Fortuna Dusseldorf are coming off of a bore nil-nil draw with last-place Paderborn last weekend. The Reds outshot Paderborn 12-5 and kept 51% of the possession but failed to take their chances with just one shot on target tallied.

Coach Uwe Rosler has led his team to 10 points from 39 possible away from home this campaign. Although points have been hard to come by on the road, Fortuna Dusseldorf have picked up five points from their last nine possible on their travels.

Koln are unbeaten in back to back home fixtures and have taken 20 points overall from 39 possible at the Rhein Energie Stadion. Gisdol’s team are +4 in goal difference at home.

Gisdol has two players in doubt for Sunday’s fixture. Centre-back Rafael Czichos and midfielder Niklas Hauptmann are both lacking match fitness. The coach will make a late decision on the duo.

Rosler has far more selection headaches than his counterpart. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen is ruled out due to a knee injury. Florian Kastenmeier will fill in and another solid performance in goal could see the back-up given the No. 1 goalkeeper tag.

Defender Kaan Ayhan is suspended for the fixture while forward Dawid Kownacki is ruled out through an injury. Midfielder Bernard Tekpetey could miss the fixture as well due to a thigh strain.

These teams have met just three times between 2013 and 2019. Two of those fixtures ended with both teams finding the back of the net. Earlier this season, the clubs’ only Bundesliga match of the three previous fixtures, saw Fortuna Dusseldorf win 2-0.

Koln were outplayed in the previous meeting but should be better on Sunday when the relegation playoff-place team come to town. The Rhein Derby will be a fiery contest with Koln getting the best of their local rivals.

Sunday’s match should see both teams score goals with over 2.5 scores going into the back of the net. Koln will avenge their earlier loss and inflict more relegation pressure on Rosler and company.
