Can RB Leipzig get back to winning ways versus Mainz?

RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga title hopes took a major hit on matchday 26 versus Freiburg. The club could only manage a 1-1 draw versus Freiburg at home. The Red Bulls have drawn three straight matches in the league and now sit seven points behind Bayern Munich.

Mainz are coming off of a hard-fought 2-2 draw versus Koln a week ago. The club were down 2-0 before mounting an incredible two-goal comeback to gain a draw.

Coach Achim Beierlorzer has watched his Mainz team go unbeaten in three straight games picking up five points from their last nine possible. Just four points separate Mainz from the relegation playoff place and a loss to RB Leipzig could take them closer to 16th-place Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Julian Nagelsmann’s RB Leipzig team have the league’s second-best away points total (25). They have conceded the second-fewest goals on the road with just 13 allowed. Nagelsmann’s team have scored 30 times away from home, but star striker Timo Werner is struggling for form.

Werner has tallied 21 goals from 26 games in the league. He has scored just one goal in his last eight Bundesliga matches. The last time these sides met, RB Leipzig humiliated Mainz winning 8-0. Werner starred against the 05ers scoring three goals and tallying three assists.

Mainz and RB Leipzig have played seven times since the latter were promoted to the Bundesliga. All seven of those fixtures ended with over 2.5 goals scored. Five of those seven fixtures also ended with both teams scoring goals.

Beierlorzer is without goalkeeper Robin Zentner heading into the weekend. The shot-stopper is out indefinitely due to injury. Florian Mueller has stepped in to goal appearing in five matches this term. Zentner is the only absence Beierlorzer has heading into matchday 27.

Nagelsmann has two players that could miss the fixture as on-loan Chelsea player Ethan Ampadu and midfielder Emile Forsberg are regaining their fitness. Ampadu has a back issue while Forsberg is recovering from tonsillitis.

Six of Mainz’s last nine matches in the Bundesliga finished with both teams scoring. They have been able to find the back of the net but guilty of conceding goals. They should concede goals once again to RB Leipzig, but an 8-0 losses is unlikely.

RB Leipzig should have put multiple goals past Freiburg last weekend. However, they just didn’t have their shooting boots on. Expect RB Leipzig to be better on matchday 27. Expect both teams to score with over 2.5 goals tallied as RB Leipzig win.
