Top-flight action returned to Germany last weekend as the Bundesliga resumed following a two-month lay-off. Given the unusual circumstances, it’s fair to say the previous round of fixtures was a success.

Matchday 27 kicks off on Friday evening with the hugely important Berlin derby between Hertha and Union taking place at the Olympiastadion in country’s capital.

There really is very little to separate the two teams at the moment. Hertha currently sit eleventh – one place and one point ahead of Union – while Union’s goal difference (-11) is slightly better than Hertha’s (-13).

Hertha returned to action with an impressive 3-0 victory away at Hoffenheim. Vedad Ibisevic and Matheus Cunha added to a Kevin Akpoguma own goal to hand Burno Labbadia a debut win as Hertha head coach.

Following draws with Fortuna Dusseldorf and Werder Bremen before the season was put on hold, Hertha are now unbeaten in their previous three games.

Meanwhile, Union were beaten 2-0 by league-leaders Bayern Munich last time out. The Iron Ones put up a decent fight against Bayern, but the reigning champions’ superiority eventually shone through.

Prior to the start of the 2019/20 campaign, newly-promoted Union were among the favourites for relegation. However, victories over title-chasers Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach prove that Urs Fischer’s side belong at this level.

Of course, with eight games still to play, neither Union or Hertha are entirely safe from relegation just yet. But with a seven-point gap between Union and the bottom three, things are looking good for the clubs from the capital.

The last time the rivals met was back in November – the first Bundesliga derby between east and west Berlin. To say it was a lively affair would be a massive understatement.

After fans had entered the pitch and the game was halted due to flying flares, Sebastian Polter’s late penalty earned Union a famous victory over their hated neighbours.

Hertha will be without centre-back Karim Rekik this weekend, while Salomon Kalou continues his suspension for flouting regulations regarding the pandemic.

As for Union, Sheraldo Becker, Akaki Gogia, Laurenz Dehl, Maurice Opfermann Arcones, and Yunus Malli will all be unavailable for selection due to injury.

Hertha have drawn four of their last eight games, while both teams have scored in ten of Union’s previous 13 away games in all competitions.

Taking these statistics into consideration, Forebet predicts that Hertha and Union will play out a high-scoring draw.
