Bundesliga comeback sees Augsburg host Wolfsburg

Top-flight action in Germany returns this weekend as the Bundesliga becomes the first major European football league to bounce back after the coronavirus pandemic.

In total, there are six games taking place on Saturday, and the meeting between Augsburg and Wolfsburg at the WWK Arena is set to be an intriguing battle.

Augsburg find themselves fourteenth in the table – one point ahead of Mainz and five points clear of the bottom three.

Heiko Herrlich’s side had lost three straight games before the season was put on hold, while one win since the turn of the year has left Augsburg in a precarious position.

A record of W7-D6-L12 means that Augsburg aren’t entirely out of the relegation battle, although a couple of positive results should be enough to secure their safety.

On the other hand, Wolfsburg were flying before the campaign was halted. The Wolves were unbeaten in their previous six games – winning three and drawing three.

This excellent run has lifted Oliver Glasner’s men up to seventh in the standings – one point behind Schalke and 13 shy of the top four.

While a place in next season’s Champions League may be unreachable, Wolfsburg are definitely capable of securing a Europe League spot if they pick up where they left off.

Wolfsburg return to action with a record of W9-D9-L7, while only Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig boast a better defensive record in the division.

The recent head-to-head record between the two sides doesn’t look too promising for Augsburg. Wolfsburg are unbeaten in their previous four meetings, including an 8-1 demolition on the final day of the 2018/19 campaign.

Wout Weghorst scored a hat-trick on that occasion, and the striker will be a threat again this time around. The 27-year-old is Wolfsburg’s top scorer this season with 15 goals and five assists in all competitions.

Looking at the injury news, Ignacio Camacho and William will both be absent for Wolfsburg this weekend.

Meanwhile, right-back Simon Asta remains sidelined for Augsburg as he continues to recover from a cruciate ligament rupture.

Before the break, Wolfsburg were one of Germany’s in-form teams. By contrast, Augsburg were on a dismal run. It’s no surprise that Wolfsburg are expected to return with a win.

Forebet predicts that Wolfsburg will claim all three points by netting over 2.5 goals. Both teams are likely to score, but the away side should cruise to a comfortable victory.
