Copenhagen to get vital away goal versus Istanbul Basaksehir

Denmark’s FC Copenhagen travel to Turkey to face off with Istanbul Basaksehir on Thursday night in the Europa League last 16.

Istanbul Basaksehir topped their group besting the likes of Roma, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Wolfsberger to reach the knockout round.

In the last 32, Istanbul Basaksehir knocked out Sporting Lisbon after overturning a first leg 3-1 deficit at home forcing extra-time by winning 3-1 in the second match. The last 32 tie was decided in extra-time as Istanbul Basaksehir’s Edin Visca scored from the penalty spot in the 119th minute of play.

Copenhagen finished second in Group B behind Malmo. It wasn’t the strongest of group performances but the Danish team parlayed their qualification into the knockout round by knocking off Scotland’s Celtic 4-1 on aggregate in the round of 32.

Manager Ståle Solbakken’s team earned a 1-1 draw at home before sealing qualification to the round of 16 with a fantastic 3-1 win at Celtic Park. The winning goal and subsequent third both came in the final five minutes of the fixture.

Fredrik Gulbrandsen is the only injury worry for Istanbul Basaksehir’s manager Okan Buruk. The manager is expected to play a similar side to the one he recently fielded against Goztepe at the weekend in the Turkish Super League.

Istanbul Basaksehir striker and leading scorer Enzo Crivelli missed the team’s second leg game against Sporting Lisbon due to suspension. He will return to his normal striker position for the second leg. Crivelli has bagged a team-leading 13 goals in all competitions.

Copenhagen will have Viktor Fischer back from injury for the match. Fischer has four goals in all competitions but recently missed games due to an injury setback.

Solbakken has several players out with injuries including Jonas Wind, Nicolai Boilesen, Robert Mudrazija, and Stephan Andersen. Copenhagen could also be without Ragnar Sigurdsson who is a major doubt for the fixture.

As it stands, the match in Turkey will be played in front of fans while several games around the continent in the Europa League will be played behind closed doors. The second leg in Denmark has already been set for closed doors due to the Danish government’s rules to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Thursday’s game should be cagey with injuries potentially affecting the outcome of the game for Copenhagen. The Danish team should be able to get the away goal they need to take back home as this fixture ends in a stalemate.
