Barnsley and Cardiff in low-scoring affair

Barnsley’s recent impressive 3-match winning streak in the Championship came to an end last weekend when The Tykes were handed a 2-0 defeat away from home at Reading, so Saturday’s hosts still remain in the relegation zone ahead of this upcoming clash against Cardiff City.

Barnsley had previously put together a promising winning run of results which had seen the hosts record victories over Fulham 3-0 away, Middlesbrough at home 1-0 and a 1-0 win on the road at Hull City.

Results on home turf at Oakwell continue to bring mixed returns as Barnsley have registered wins against Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough but they’ve also fallen foul to losses against Preston North End and Birmingham City too.

Barnsley have made improvements at home though as The Tykes have lost just 2 of their last 9 matches at Oakwell while also posting earlier wins over Hull City and QPR as well as picking up points in draws with Reading, West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday.

The hosts’ improved fortunes at home should see a competitive Barnsley side hold their own here and goals could be in short supply as their last 3 matches have all resulted in under 2.5 goals.

Onto Cardiff City and the visitors’ winless run in the Championship was extended to 4 matches without success as The Bluebirds were held to a 2-2 draw at home by high-flying Brentford which prevented Cardiff from making up any ground on the play-off pack.

The Welsh club currently sit in 11th place thanks to a recent 2-2 draw at home with Wigan Athletic along with back-to-back defeats to Stoke City 2-0 and Nottingham Forest 1-0, and with just 3 wins out of their last 11 matches overall in the second tier, Cardiff may struggle to gain all three points against Barnsley as well.

Results away from home have also produced a mixed bag for Cardiff on their travels too as they’ve recorded wins at luton Town and Huddersfield Town but have also lost at QPR and Stoke City, while 3 of their last 4 matches on the road also resulted in under 2.5 goals being scored.

Based on current form there appears little to separate Barnsley and Cardiff City ahead of this clash and goals could be a scarce commodity as a result.
