The Premier League continues this weekend but most eyes will be on Wembley Stadium as that is where the first major silverware of the English football season is decided. The League Cup final will take place on Sunday afternoon between Aston Villa and Manchester City.

The showpiece occasion will come as a break from the relegation battle currently being faced by Aston Villa. They come into this game having lost each of their last 3 matches all of which were in the Premier League and Aston Villa are currently just one point above the relegation zone.

The three defeats have come at home against Tottenham Hotspur and away against Bournemouth and Southampton. The two away defeats proved costly as they were against teams also in the bottom half are of the Premier League. However, Aston Villa have been entertaining to watch for the neutral and they have seen both teams score in 9 of their last 10 matches in all competitions.

Two of those 9 games came in the League Cup semi-final against Leicester City. Aston Villa came away from the first leg at the King Power Stadium with a 1-1 draw and finished the job at home, winning the match 2-1. Aston Villa started their League Cup campaign back on the 27th of August with a convincing 6-1 win at Crewe Alexandra. A 3-1 win at Brighton Hove Albion followed before a good 2-1 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Then came the famous 5-0 victory over the Liverpool youth team in the quarter-final.

Manchester City come into this game on the back of a 2-1 victory at Real Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16 on Wednesday night. Despite falling a goal behind in the second half they came back strongly to win the match and put themselves in control of the tie. That result means Manchester City have won each of their last 3 games in all competitions including wins over West Ham United at home and Leicester City away in the Premier League.

Trends show Manchester City have lost only 2 of their last 13 games in all competitions. They started their League Cup campaign away at Preston North End and won the match 3-0. A home victory over Southampton was followed by an away win at Oxford United. The semi-final paired Manchester City with Manchester United and they got the job done in the first leg at Old Trafford, winning 3-1.

Team news and Aston Villa have 4 players unavailable for this game as John McGinn, Keinan Davis, Tom Heaton and Wesley Moraes all miss out due to injury. Anwar El-Ghazi is a doubt due to a head injury.

Manchester City are sweating on the fitness of Aymeric Laporte but if there is any doubt it is unlikely the Frenchman will be risked. The only other player who is expected to miss the match is Leroy Sane who is recovering from a knee injury.

Aston Villa took a real hiding when the teams met in the Premier League in January at Villa Park. Manchester City won that game 6-1 and while the final score in this match is unlikely to be the same, Pep Guardiola’s team are expected to cruise to victory.
