Barnsley may struggle to keep pace with in-form Birmingham

Barnsley claimed a valuable point in their Yorkshire derby against Sheffield Wednesday and on the weekend but this also extended the Tuesday night’s host’s run without a win in the Championship to 4 matches.

Barnsley’s last success in the second tier came in the shape of another all-Yorkshire affair back in mid-December when The Tykes registered a 2-1 home win over Huddersfield Town, but the hosts have since slumped to 3 defeats from their last 4 matches overall.

Defeats away from home at Bristol City 1-0 and fellow strugglers, Charlton Athletic 2-1 were either side of a heavy 3-0 defeat on home turf at Oakwell to play-off hopefuls, Preston North End, so it’s fair to say that Barnsley still seem to be swimming against the tide.

Having taken just 1 point from the last possible 12 that were on offer, Barnsley now find themselves a significant 8 points adrift of fourth from bottom club, Stoke City and safety as they turn their attentions to Tuesday night’s encounter against Birmingham City.

Results at home for Barnsley though do provide some encouragement for the hosts as they’ve suffered just 1 defeat out of their last 7 matches at Oakwell.

Onto Birmingham City, and what a difference a few weeks can make in football - the visitors were seemingly spiralling out of control and heading fast down to the relegation zone as they’d lost 5 of their 6 matches played in the Championship from mid-December through to New Years Day, but Birmingham have since staged a dramatic recovery.

Having earned just 1 point from the 18 on offer during this bleak period, Blues fans were once again fearing the worst as their side seemed powerless to halt their slide down the Championship table after defeats to QPR, West Brom, Hull City, Leeds United and Wigan Athletic, but Pep Clotet’s side have proved they’re a resilient bunch.

A 2-1 home win against Blackburn Rovers was the catalyst for a Blues revival and the visitors have gone from strength to strength, accumulating an 8-match unbeaten run in all competitions which included an FA Cup win over their temporary tenants, Coventry City.

Birmingham have also collected valuable away wins at Luton Town and Bristol City which were in between a 2-1 home win against high-flying Nottingham Forest, so Birmingham won’t be short of confidence ahead of this clash at Barnsley.

Barnsley will be under pressure at home to get a result while Birmingham can hit their hosts on the counter-attack here and cause a few problems. Backing Birmingham with the draw no bet option looks the best play here.
