Eredivisie title hopefuls AZ Alkmaar welcome Feyenoord to the AFAS Stadion on Sunday afternoon for a clash between top three teams.
AZ Alkmaar are three points behind league leaders Ajax in the race for the championship. The Cheeseheads lost two straight matches in January allowing Ajax to put some space between them.
Feyenoord will not be an easy team for AZ Alkmaar to defeat. The visitors have won five straight games and sit just 10 points off of Ajax. While they won’t catch the league leaders, they could reel in AZ Alkmaar and the Champions League qualification position.
The two Dutch sides met in September with AZ Alkmaar dominating the fixture with a 3-0 win. The team won both halves with a goal coming in the opening 45 minutes and two more in the second period.
Despite winning earlier this season, Feyenoord have a great recent record versus the Cheeseheads. They are unbeaten in eight of their last nine matches. That includes seven victories. AZ Alkmaar did achieve a 1-1 draw verses Feyenoord the last time the teams met at the AFAS Stadion.
AZ Alkmaar have taken 25 points from 33 possible playing at home this season. Arne Slot’s team has scored 26 goals and conceded eight times at the AFAS Stadion.
Feyenoord have secured 16 points from 30 possible on their travels. They have registered a zero-goal difference with 16 goals for and 16 goals against this term. Despite the low number of goals scored and high number of goals conceded, Feyenoord are on a five-match unbeaten run on the road.
AZ Alkmaar forward Myron Boadu is in fine form. He has scored 19 goals in all competitions and was linked with a January transfer to Premier League teams West Ham and Everton.
With the Cheeseheads fighting for an Eredivisie title, he remained with the team and could fire them to silverware. Oussama Idrissi has also attracted interest from other clubs thanks to his 15 goals in all competitions.
Feyenoord are atop the Eredivisie form table with 16 points from their last 18 possible. Dick Advocaat’s team is playing very well but will be up against tough opposition on Sunday.
AZ Alkmaar should squeeze past Feyenoord in a thrilling encounter with goals going in at both ends. Sunday’s game should see both teams score and over 2.5 goals go into the back of the nets.
