Another local derby is featured in Saturday’s Championship action and this time it’s the turn of Yorkshire as Barnsley take on Sheffield Wednesday at Oakwell in the second of the early kick-offs this Saturday lunchtime.
Recent overall form would suggest that Barnsley have been up against the ropes over the past few weeks as The Tykes have lost 4 of their last 5 matches having suffered defeats to Derby County, Bristol City, Preston North End and last weekend’s relegation ‘six-pointer’ loss to Charlton Athletic.
However, putting things into perspective, it should be noted that 3 of Barnsley’s last 5 matches have been away from home where they’ve suffered losses at the aforementioned Derby, Bristol City and Charlton, but the story appears to be very different in recent matches on home turf at Oakwell.
Indeed, Barnsley have lost just 1 of their last 6 matches and just 2 of their last 10 in their own backyard as Gerhard Struber’s side continue their dogged battle against relegation. The hosts have certainly tightened up at home under Struber with Barnsley gaining points in draws with Reading and West Brom as well as wins against QPR and Huddersfield Town.
Onto Sheffield Wednesday and had this match been played around Christmas time, The Owls would more than likely have strolled to three points as the Sheffield side were enjoying a solid 6-match sequence without defeat at that time.
However, the visitors have subsequently managed to collect just 1 further win from their following 7 matches in the Championship which was a surprising 2-0 win away at Yorkshire rivals, Leeds United.
Aside from that lone victory though, The Owls have suffered 5 defeats out of these last 7 matches which makes them far from guaranteed of all three points here and even casts doubt over whether Garry Monk’s side are capable of picking up 1 point.
Results away from home have produced mixed returns as Wednesday have picked up wins on the road at Nottingham Forest and Leeds but have also fallen to losses at lowly Stoke City and Wigan Athletic as well.
As we know, the form book generally gets tossed out of the proverbial window when a local derby rolls around and this may be no exception. These clashes between Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday have generally been low-scoring affairs as the last 8 meetings between these two sides have resulted in under 2.5 goals.
