Leicester heading for comfortable victory over Newcastle

With Liverpool racing away at the top of the Premier League table, Leicester must now be aiming to solidify second place when they face Newcastle and St. James’ Park on Wednesday.

After winning 13 of their 20 league games so far in 2019/20, the Foxes have accumulated 42 points – one more than third-place Manchester City.

However, recent defeats to Man City and Liverpool have taken the shine off a remarkable first half of the campaign.

Leicester returned to winning ways last time out with a spirited victory over West Ham and manager Brendan Rodgers will be keen to secure back-to-back wins when his side visit the North East.

Following a 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Liverpool, Rodgers made nine changes for the game against the Hammers. The Foxes boss is likely to rotate his side again given the sheer volume of games recently.

Newcastle come into this game on the back of consecutive league defeats, so Steve Bruce will be looking for a response from his players.

The Magpies were thrashed 4-1 at Manchester United on Boxing Day, before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Everton in the previous round.

This poor run of results has left Newcastle in eleventh – 17 points behind Leicester City with a goal difference of –10.

Newcastle’s main problem this season has been finding the back of the net. Jonjo Shelvey is the club’s top goalscorer in the league with just five goals to his name.

Centre-back Fabian Schar scored against Everton in the previous game, and this was the defender’s sixth goal of 2019. Newcastle can’t keep relying on their defenders for goals.

Still, Newcastle could be without Schar for the visit of Leicester after the defender suffered a hamstring injury last time out.

Schar is one of nine possible absentees for Newcastle, and this lengthy injury list will not help Steve Bruce.

Leicester have no fresh injury concerns, so we could see Rodgers making full use of his squad again on New Year’s Day.

The Foxes have won eight of the last ten meetings between these two sides. Leicester thrashed Newcastle 5-0 earlier in the season, with Jamie Vardy bagging a brace.

Given the respective league position of both sides, Leicester look set to claim yet another victory over Newcastle this time around.

Forebet predicts that Leicester should score over 1.5 goals on their way to victory.
