After recording back-to-back wins in the Championship just before Christmas it looked like Sheffield Wednesday were going to have an enjoyable and successful festive period but recent back-to-back defeats have put paid to that so far.
A convincing 4-0 win away from home at Nottingham Forest was followed by a solid 1-0 home win against Bristol City at Hillsborough, but defeats to Stoke City and Cardiff City have burst Wednesday’s and manager, Garry Monk’s bubble somewhat, and The Owls have been left clinging onto 6th place as a result.
However, the visit of mid-table outfit Hull City brings the potential of three for Sheffield Wednesday as Hull’s form on the road in the Championship is inconsistent at best, while Wednesday will be desperate to hang onto their current play-off spot.
Results at Hillsborough haven’t been too bad though for The Owls as they’ve lost just 2 of their 12 matches at home so far this season and they’ve collected notable wins against Brentford and Bristol City in recent weeks.
Onto Hull City and The Tigers’ inconsistent results reared their head again on Sunday afternoon when they registered a 2-1 win away from home at QPR which followed a 2-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.
You can never be quite sure what you’re going to get from Hull City from match to match as the visitors have beaten Birmingham City 3-0 but lost to Leeds United and Barnsley - the latter being against the second from bottom side in the Championship.
It’s been feast or famine for Hull City in recent weeks at their KCOM Stadium where they’ve posted 6 of their total of 10 wins so far this season, but away from home, The Tigers have managed just 1 win out of their last 5 matches.
That away-day win came in the shape of the aforementioned victory at Loftus Road against QPR but Hull had previously drawn at Middlesbrough and Charlton Athletic (both in 2-2 draws), as well as being on the end of defeats at Barnsley and Leeds United.
To sum up, whilst it’s difficult to predict which Hull side will take to the field on New Years Day, Sheffield Wednesday with home advantage at Hillsborough should claim the points here.
