Although it was a slightly disappointing 1-1 draw away at second from bottom Barnsley on Boxing Day, that result in South Yorkshire nevertheless extended West Brom’s unbeaten run in the Championship to an impressive 14 matches.
This solid sequence of results has helped lift Slaven Bilic’s side to the top of the Championship and a valuable 3-point lead over 2nd placed Leeds United ahead of Sunday’s action in the second tier.
9 of these 14 matches have also seen The Baggies grab wins during this period and a successful string of results over this festive season will really give West Brom a decent chance of building a good platform from which to launch their final push for automatic promotion in the second half of the season.
West Brom also remain the only team in the Championship still to be unbeaten at home this season as The Hawthorns has become a fortress for The Baggies, winning 6 and drawing 5 of their 11 home matches to date.
In addition, the west midlands club won the last encounter against Middlesbrough in a 1-0 win away from home at the Riverside Stadium back in October.
Onto Middlesbrough, and Gareth Southgate’s side finally seem to be clicking into gear as Boro recorded back-to-back wins either side of Christmas Day with home wins against Stoke City 2-1 and their Boxing Day 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town.
Boro have now actually lost just 1 of their last 5 matches overall in recent times which will have come as welcome relief for Southgate who was becoming increasingly under pressure in the hot-seat at the Riverside Stadium.
This recent revival also includes an earlier 1-0 home win against Charlton Athletic along with a decent point in a 1-1 draw away from home at Nottingham Forest, but this turnaround in form is expected to be under intense scrutiny at The Hawthorns on Sunday.
This is especially so as Middlesbrough have still yet to register a win on their travels in the Championship this season, drawing 5 and losing 6 of their 11 away matches to date this term.
Indeed, the bigger picture shows that Middlesbrough have won just 2 of their last 17 matches on the road in the Championship, and this upcoming trip to West Brom will test them to their limits.
