Ajax to continue strong UCL form against Lille

Champions League Group H is wide open and may be the most exciting group in the competition. It started with four teams all with the possibility of winning the group. Now, three teams are still alive and all level on seven points apiece.
Ajax, Chelsea, and Valencia all go into matchday 5 in the Champions League group stage level on seven points. Ajax travel to France to play Lille who have already been eliminated from making the last 16 of the Champions League.
Chelsea and Valencia will clash at the Mestalla setting up what could be a fantastic final Champions League group stage matchday for the clubs.
Ajax dropped the ball in their previous Champions League fixture against Chelsea. The Dutch team was up 4-1 after 55 minutes but let Chelsea score three times to end the game with a draw. The Blues nearly won the fixture but VAR overturned a fifth goal which would have seen the English side to victory.
Erik ten Hag’s team blasted Lille in their previous group stage meeting in Amsterdam, 3-0. Quincy Promes, Edson Alvarez, and Nicolas Tagliafico scored as Ajax cruised to victory.
Lille have had a torrid time in the group stage having lost three games and drawn one. Although Lille cannot qualify for the Champions League last 16, they can still make the Europa League by finishing third in the league.
Christophe Galtier’s team is in terrible form. Lille have not won any of their last four fixtures in all competitions. Three of those games ended in losses. Paris Saint-Germain defeated Lille at the weekend 2-0 pushing their confidence even lower.
The good news for Galtier is his team’s goals allowed record at home. Lille have allowed just 0.78 goals per match at home in all competitions. They have scored 1.78 goals per game on their own turf.
Ajax are in first place in the Eredivisie and unbeaten in five straight games in all competitions. The team has been just as good on the road as at home in terms of goals. Ajax average 2.55 goals per game on the road while conceding just 1.27 strikes per match.
Wednesday night’s fixture should be similar to the one these teams played in Amsterdam in September. Ajax will claim a victory with over 2.5 goals scored. As Lille are slightly better at home, they should be able to bag a goal and make the game a little closer this time around.
