Germany clash with Northern Ireland in final Euro 2020 Group C match

Germany have qualified for the Euro 2020 tournament next summer. The Germans defeated Belarus 4-0 on Saturday night.

Northern Ireland were able to gain a nil-nil draw against the Netherlands over the weekend but it wasn’t enough to stay in contention for an automatic qualification place. Michael O’Neill’s team had the chance to win the match but a missed penalty saw the Dutch hold on for a point.

Ronald Koeman’s team were rather disappointing against Northern Ireland and the draw put the team two points behind the Germans. Joachim Lowe’s team can qualify as Group C winners with a draw or win.

Germany and Northern Ireland played in Belfast in September with the visitors picking up a 2-0 win. O’Neill’s team held Germany scoreless in the first half but allowed two goals in the second half of the match.

Marcel Halstenberg and Serge Gnabry got the goals for Germany. The scoreline flattered Germany slightly as Gnabry’s goal came in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.

Germany’s Luca Waldschmidt suffered a nasty set of injuries and will play no part in the game on Tuesday night. Waldschmidt collided with Belarus goalkeeper Alyaksandr Hutar and suffered facial fractures, a concussion, and ankle and knee injuries.

Midfielder Toni Kroos is in fine form for Germany. He scored two goals against Belarus on Saturday night.

The Real Midfielder could make way for another German player on Tuesday night as qualification has already been secured. However, Lowe could stick with his usual stars to keep the team’s good form going.

Northern Ireland tallied zero shots on target against the Netherlands. Despite their strong defensive play, they showed little in the final third against the Dutch. Nothern Ireland held just 30% possession.

When Northern Ireland and Germany played in September, O’Neill’s team only kept 25% possession and tallied two shots on target. Germany registered seven shots on target from 21 shots possible. Germany out passed Northern Ireland 842 to 269.

Lowe could rotate his squad by starting Julian Brandt and Sebastian Rudy in attack. Hertha Berlin’s Niklas Stark could get a start in defence for the Germans. Joshua Kimmich started in central midfield for Germany but could be deployed in defence if needed.

Northern Ireland won’t roll over for the Germans. They have advanced to the Euro 2020 playoffs and O’Neill will want to keep the momentum going. However, Germany will be too strong playing in Frankfurt against Northern Ireland.

The Northern Irish struggle in the final third and that will continue on Tuesday night.
