Euro 2020 Group A is done and dusted with the Czech Republic having qualified for next summer’s tournament finals.
Bulgaria are dead last in Group A but could move up to fourth place with a win or draw. It would be a moral victory for the Bulgarians, but will it happen?
Sunday’s match will be played behind closed doors after Bulgaria fans’ racist behaviour toward England’s players during the October international break.
The Czech Republic are coming off of a come from behind win over Kosovo on Thursday night. The Czechs needed two goals in the final 19 minutes to defeat Kosovo to seal their place in the tournament finals.
Bulgaria are coming off of yet another loss. Manager Georgi Dermendzhiev coached his first match with Bulgaria on Thursday night against Paraguay in an international friendly. Dermendzhiev is the national team’s third coach in the last 14 months.
Paraguay won 1-0 thanks to a 60th-minute goal from Newcastle United midfielder Miguel Almiron. The Bulgarians will hope to do better on Sunday; however, they are on a 12-match winless run. Seven of those fixtures ended in losses.
Bulgaria have been held to a clean sheet in four of their last five matches. The Czech Republic’s defence could hold them once more.
The Czech Republic will fancy their chances of winning a fourth straight game in Euro 2020 Group A qualifying. These teams met last June in Prague with the Czech Republic winning 2-1.
They did have to come from behind to claim the victory after Bulgaria went ahead 1-0 in the third minute courtesy of Ismail Isa. Patrick Schick scored twice for the Czech Republic to give them the win. Schick is not in the current Czech squad due to an ankle injury.
His presence was most likely missed against Kosovo. Midfielder Alex Kral and centre-back Ondrej Celustka got both goals for the Czech Republic .
Jaroslav Silhavy’s team dominated proceedings versus Kosovo holding the visitors to just four shots and one on target. The Czech Republic kept 59% of the possession and should see similar numbers against Bulgaria on Sunday.
Last June’s match between the Czech Republic and Bulgaria was closely contested. However, the Czech Republic have improved as Euro 2020 qualifying has progressed. With nothing to play for on Sunday, Bulgaria should struggle again versus one of Group A’s best teams.
The Czech Republic will win once more against Bulgaria in another close match. The Czechs will obtain a win to nil in a match with under 2.5 goals scored.
