Switzerland vs Georgia - 15/11/2019
2253
Switzerland head into the final international break in third place in Euro 2020 Group D on 11 points from 18 possible. The Swiss have two opportunities to gain points and usurp Group D leaders Ireland to win the group.
Georgia are fourth in Group B on eight points from 21 possible. Although the Georgians are not able to qualify for the Euro 2020 tournament through the group, they are assured a playoff place.
Manager Kakhaber Chkhetiani has got the most out of a limited squad during qualifying. Georgia won against Group D’s lesser side Gibraltar while gaining significant draws against Ireland and Denmark.
Georgia may not finish in the top two of Euro 2020 Group D, but they have dented the chances of Ireland and Demark to win the group. Can Georgia do the same to Switzerland?
The last time the two nations met, Switzerland won 2-0 in Georgia. Steven Zuber opened the scoring in the 56th minute before Denis Zakaria added a second in the 80th minute. Georgia held the Swiss for nearly 60 minutes showing their defensive strength against Group D’s best teams.
Switzerland dominated the previous meeting with Georgia in Tblisi in March. Vladimir Petkovic’s team tallied 25 shots with eight on target. Georgia managed just one shot on target from six total shots. Switzerland also kept 65% of possession.
Despite criticism and being left out of the Arsenal squad, captain Granit Xhaka should retain his place in central midfield. Xhaka is likely to leave the Emirates in January.
Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar was left out of the squad due to injury. Remo Freuler and Josip Drmic will both miss out due to injuries. Georgia midfielders Tornike Okriashvili and Saba Lobzhanidze will miss both international fixtures during the break due to their respective injuries.
Although Switzerland are fighting for the top two in Group D, they are guaranteed a playoff place. Petkovic’s team has the upper hand over their group rivals Ireland and Denmark. Ireland have just one more group game and that is versus Denmark.
Two of Switzerland’s six Group D matches finished with over 2.5 goals. Three of Georgia’s seven matches have seen over 2.5 goals scored. Friday night’s match should see over 2.5 goals scored as Switzerland keep another clean sheet against Georgia.
The Swiss could take top spot in the group and seal their progression to the Euro 2020 tournament next summer depending on results elsewhere.
