France and Turkey to battle for Group H supremacy
3422

France and Turkey will clash on Monday with the Euro 2020 Group H lead on the line. France and Turkey head into the international break level on points in Group H.

The two group rivals are not the only sides capable of winning Euro 2020 Group H. Iceland are just three points behind France and Turkey. The October international break could end with a major shake-up with Turkey, France, and Iceland all gunning for Group H supremacy.

Although France and Turkey start the international break on 15 points, the latter have one leg up on the former. Turkey defeated France 2-0 in Konya in June courtesy of goals from Kaan Ayhan and Cengiz Under. Turkey had the match wrapped up by halftime as France disappointed.

France manager Didier Deschamps has several injury issues to key players heading into the weekend. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is out for the remainder of the season due to a dislocated elbow. The shot-stopper suffered the injury while playing for Tottenham Hotspur last weekend against Brighton.

Lloris’ absence will give Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane the chance to wear the captain’s armband this weekend. Midfielder Paul Pogba is also out with an injury while striker Kylian Mbappe was sent back to Paris Saint-Germain due to re-aggravating a hamstring injury.

Deschamps is also without Anthony Martial, Ousmane Dembele, and Alexandre Lacazette for the weekend. The lack of so many top players would hurt most teams in Euro 2020 qualifying. However, Deschamps has a wealth of players he can call on including Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud.

Turkey head coach Senol Gunes has selected a side with a majority of players coming from the Turkish top flight. Under, who scored the last time these teams met, has been called back into the squad.

Despite not seeing playing time at Everton, Gunes has called Cenk Tosun into the team. He may not get much pitch time at Goodison Park, but he does play regularly for the national team. Tosun will be joined in the attack by Burak Yimaz who has scored 24 career international goals.

France have dominated their series of matches against Turkey. The French have posted a 5W-0D-1L record. That one loss did come against Turkey last summer in Euro 2020 qualifying. France’s last victory over Turkey came over 10 years ago.

Monday night’s match will have huge implications on Group I. The winner should be in the driver’s seat for automatic qualification. Which side will win: France or Turkey?
