League Two Colchester face tough test against Spurs

League Two Colchester face tough test against Spurs
2060

Colchester United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Colchester Community Stadium on Tuesday night in an exciting EFL Cup third-round tie for the hosts.

Colchester are currently 10th in League Two, while Spurs sit 7th in the Premier League.

Tottenham come into this match on the back of a 2-1 defeat away at Leicester City. Harry Kane gave Spurs the lead in the first half but Tottenham failed to hold on and were eventually punished for a poor second half performance.

It’s been a mixed start to the season for the north London club. With 2 wins, 2 draws, and 2 defeats to their name, Spurs are yet to get going.

On the other hand, Colchester will come into this match full of confidence having won their previous two league games.

An impressive 3-0 away win at Swindon Town was followed up by a 2-1 victory against Leyton Orient, and Colchester would love to extend their winning streak by causing an upset on Tuesday.

Just 3 of the 24 League Two sides have a better defensive record than Colchester this season. However, 8 teams directly below them in the table have scored more goals.

With that being said, form often goes out the window in these sorts of matches, and Colchester manager John McGreal will be confident that his side can put up a good fight against Premier League opposition.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is likely to shake up his starting eleven for this one. A number of fringe players will probably be given an opportunity to perform, while some of Spurs’ more high-profile names could be given a rest.

Still, Juan Foyth, Ryan Sessegnon, and Giovani Lo Celso remain side-lined with injuries.

McGreal will undoubtedly field his strongest eleven as the League Two side look to advance into the fourth-round.

Tottenham and Colchester have only met once previously. Spurs claimed a comfortable 4-1 victory in an FA Cup fourth-round tie back in 2016, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if we see a similar scoreline on Tuesday.

Pochettino will be looking to use this competition to reinstall some confidence back into his side, and Spurs are likely to come away with a resounding victory against Colchester on Tuesday.
