Spurs to edge past Olympiacos in Group B opener
3007
Tottenham Hotspur travel to Greece to face Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League Group B opener on Wednesday.
The Premier League club were finalists in this competition last season but missed out on the title, losing to fellow English side Liverpool.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team will feel they have the ability to go deep into the tournament again this year, with Bayern Munich their only serious threat in Group B.
Spurs beat teams such as Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City on their way to the final last season and in doing so, established themselves as one of the continents top clubs.
Olympiacos are no strangers to European football and have consistently qualified for the Champions League throughout their history.
However, the Greek club have failed to make it past the quarter-final stage of the competition and last progressed from their group in 2013/14.
Olympiacos are currently top of the Greek Super League after winning all 3 of their matches so far this season.
They are also yet to conceded a goal in domestic competition, so Spurs may find it hard to break down their strong defence.
On the other hand, Tottenham are 3rd in the Premier League with a record of W2-D2-L1.
They come into this clash on the back of a 4-0 win against Crystal Palace. Son Heung-min bagged a brace and Erik Lamela also got on the scoresheet.
The only two meetings between Spurs and Olympiacos came back in 1972 as the clubs clashed in the second round of the UEFA Cup. Spurs won the first leg 4-0 at home before losing the second leg 1-0 in Greece.
Spurs will be confident of qualifying for the next round from a group that also features Bayern Munich and Red Star Belgrade.
The German giant is the group favorite, but Tottenham shouldn’t have a problem finishing second.
Olympiacos are not expected to make it into the last 16, and will have to be at their very best on Wednesday to keep out last season’s finalists.
Despite the Greek’s impressive start domestically, Spurs are expected to come away with all three points.
Forebet predicts that Olympiacos will score, but that Tottenham will claim an important away victory.
