Sweden to aid qualification hopes with a win in the Faroe Islands
2197
On Thursday night, Sweden attempt to keep their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign on track, as the Scandinavians visit Group F whipping boys the Faroe Islands.
The home side remains one of the strugglers of international football. The lack of choice of players has hindered the tiny countries development. However, they have risen in the FIFA world ranking in recent years, as the home side are now 108th in the world out of 211 teams.
They are usually an easy three points for most teams in European Championship qualifying, and that has been the case so far in the current campaign.
The Faroes have lost all four of their qualifiers so far, conceding at least twice in all of the defeats. Last time out, they suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Norway.
The loss last time out means that the home team has now lost eight straight qualifiers for the European Championships. They have also lost seven of their last eight qualifying matches on home soil. At least in that run, they picked up a 2-1 win over Greece. Another victory on Thursday looks unlikely.
Sweden have made a mixed start to their Euro 2020 qualification campaign, picking up seven points from games against Romania, Norway, Malta and last time out Spain.
Janne Andersson’s side were comfortably beaten in Spain last time out. The loss ended a seven-game unbeaten run for the Scandinavians in qualifying.
The defeat also ended a prolific run of form for the visitors in Euro qualifying, as they had scored at least twice in all seven undefeated matches.
The fact that Sweden have struggled on their travels in qualifying will offer encouragement to the home side that they may well be able to pull off a rare victory. However, Forebet predicts that Andersson’s side will get back to winning ways in a high-scoring game.
