The English Championship goes up a notch this week as we see the first round of midweek fixtures. This is a chance for teams to build on their start or attempt to get their season back on track following the opening three games of the season.
On Wednesday 21st August we have several matches to enjoy including a meeting between two teams who playing in the Premier League last season. Cardiff City host Huddersfield Town at the Cardiff City Stadium in what is a big game for both teams.
Cardiff City started the season with a 3-2 defeat away to Wigan Athletic. It was a timely reminder of just how tough the Championship can be and Cardiff City responded with a 2-1 home win over Luton Town in their following match.
However, their away troubles continued on Sunday and Cardiff City slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Reading. It was a hugely disappointing result and performance by The Bluebirds which leaves them down in 19th place in the Championship table. They were 2-0 down at half-time and could not find a way back into the match in the second half, eventually conceding a third with 10 minutes left on the clock.
Trends show Cardiff City have been exciting to watch for the neutral and they have seen over 2.5 goals in each of their three Championship games this season.
Huddersfield Town find themselves in a worse position than Cardiff City and they are 23rd in the Championship. Having been relegated from the Premier League season, fans were hopeful Jan Siewert was the man to steer them straight back to the top-flight this season.
However, things have not worked out that way and Huddersfield Town have failed to win any of their three matches this season. They started the campaign with a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Derby County before being held 1-1 away from home by Queens Park Rangers.
The Terriers were then dumped out of the League Cup at the first time of asking at home to Lincoln City and followed that with a 2-1 loss at home to Fulham in the Championship last weekend.
The defeat to Fulham saw Siewert lose his job having led the club to just one win in seven months. They continue to search for a new manager ahead of this game.
Team news and Cardiff City are still without some key players for this match with goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and defender Sol Bamba among the injured. Central midfielder Marlon Pack is also expected to miss out.
Huddersfield Town do not have any major injury worries. Trevoh Chalobah, who is on loan from Chelsea, could start along with Adama Diakhaby who did not feature against Fulham.
Both teams need to win this game to move up the Championship table. Neither have been convincing this season and it is difficult to split them. The one thing we should see is goals and the draw with both teams scoring is a tempting bet.
