Can Middlesbrough edge past Brentford?

Can Middlesbrough edge past Brentford?

Middlesbrough played an exciting 3-3 draw against Luton Town last weekend. Despite the excitement for neutrals, it was a frustrating result for new Boro manager Jonathan Woodgate.

His team conceded the lead twice to Luton Town allowing the home side to score five minutes from time to claim a point. Middlesbrough now welcome Brentford, who lost their season opener to Birmingham City, 1-0.

Brentford’s defence allowed just one shot from Birmingham City, however, that one shot found its way into the back of the net. Manager Thomas Frank watched his team collect over 70% possession as they battered Birmingham City. Yet, Brentford couldn’t find an equaliser.

The away team is unbeaten in the last five matches between Middlesbrough and Brentford. Last season saw the visiting side win both fixtures. Brentford claimed a 2-1 win at the Riverside Stadium. It was their first win at Middlesbrough’s ground in 11 tries.

Woodgate will expect an improved defensive effort from his players. The first-year head coach has a team capable of challenging for a promotion playoff place. However, the club saw turnover in the summer with players and former manager Tony Pulis departing.

Middlesbrough striker Ashley Fletcher goes into the fixture in fine form. Fletcher scored against Luton Town last weekend in the teams’ 3-3 draw. The striker also found the back of the net against Brentford last season at the Riverside Stadium. Fletcher scored five times in 21 appearances in 2018-19.

Brentford sold last season’s leading goalscorer Neal Maupay earlier this week to Premier League team Brighton. Maupay tallied 25 EFL Championship goals last term. The good news for Frank is Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma are still at the club. They combined for 20 goals a year ago.

The Bees’ away form has been atrocious in the EFL Championship. Brentford are winless in 20 of their last 22 away fixtures in the league.

Matches between Boro and Brentford are typically high scoring. The clubs combined for over 2.5 goals in their last five matches played at the Riverside Stadium. However, with both teams finding their feet early on, goals could be at a premium.

Woodgate will fancy his chances of a first managerial win. He needs his Middlesbrough players to play well defensively and improve from last week. The Boro should pick up their first victory of the season and remain undefeated.

Expect a low-scoring game at the Riverside with Middlesbrough edging Brentford with a win to nil.
