Can PSV Eindhoven rebound now in the Europa League?

PSV Eindhoven were dumped from the Champions League qualifying rounds. Now, the Dutch club aims to rebound and keep their European hopes alive against Norway’s FK Haugesund in the Europa League.

FK Haugesund finished the 2018 Eliteserien season in fourth place earning the chance to play in the Europa League qualifying rounds. The Norwegian club has already played in the Europa League first and second qualify stages.

The team defeated Cliftonville 6-1 in the first qualifying round before beating Sturm Graz 3-2 in the second qualifying round. Now, they are two matches away from the Europa League group stage.

PSV Eindhoven will be a notch up in competition for FK Haugesund. While the team defeated semi-professional club Cliftonville and Austria’s Sturm Graz, they now must play a strong PSV Eindhoven.

The Dutch club were eliminated from the Champions League second qualifying round by FC Basel a week ago. They followed it up with a draw in their Eredivisie season opener, 1-1, with FC Twente.

While FK Haugesund finished four in the Eliteserien in 2018, they are struggling for form in this season’s Norwegian top-flight. The club has already played 18 league matches and sit eighth in the table.

FK Haugesund are winless in five of their last six league matches. They have tallied the Eliteserien’s fourth most goals with 25.

PSV Eindhoven have never played FK Haugesund previously. Although they are winless in their last two matches in all competitions, PSV will fancy their chances of an away result.

It was PSV Eindhoven’s trip to FC Basel in the Champions League second qualifying round that upended them in the competition.

PSV Eindhoven fell behind early due to an Eray Cumart goal. Bruma levelled the score but a second-half goal from Ricky van Wolfswinkel gave the Swiss team the win.

Van Bommel could give Ibrahim Affellay a start against FK Haugesund. The attacking midfielder returned to the club over the summer. Forward Hirving Lozano did not play at the weekend against FC Twente.

The Mexican international completed 76 minutes earlier in the week against FC Basel. Van Bommel had hoped he could get past FC Twente without the forward.

On paper, PSV Eindhoven are a superior side in terms of talent. However, they have underperformed this season in two of their three matches.

Can FK Haugesund nick a win at home? They should get a goal against PSV Eindhoven’s poor defence but the Dutch will pick up a win in the first leg.

Expect both teams to score and over 2.5 goals tallied. PSV Eindhoven’s three games this season have all seen both teams score.
