Blackburn Rovers host Charlton Athletic to kick off EFL Championship season

Charlton Athletic kick off their return to the EFL Championship this weekend as they travel to Ewood Park to play Blackburn Rovers.

The Addicks are one of the favourites to be relegated this season and manager Lee Bowyer has his work cut out for himself. Charlton Athletic achieved promotion by winning the League One playoffs beating Sunderland in the final.

Bowyer still has last season’s top scorer Lyle Taylor at the club following a 21-goal campaign. Taylor has been joined by several new signings to help bolster Charlton Athletic’s chances of retaining their EFL Championship place.

Blackburn Rovers go into their second season of EFL Championship football. Last season, manager Tony Mowbray led Blackburn Rovers to a comfortable 15th place. Blackburn Rovers were 20 points above the relegation zone but 14 from the top six.

Mowbray brought in some interesting names in offseason and on paper, Blackburn Rovers could contend for a promotion playoff place. Three big names have arrived to improve the squad.

Stewart Downing, Bradley Johnson, and Sam Gallagher have all joined Blackburn Rovers and the combination of the trio could be enough for a promotion playoff place. Of course, we are a long way away from the promotion playoffs.

One area Blackburn Rovers must work on this season is defence. They allowed 69 goals in 2018-19, which was the fifth most in the EFL Championship. Blackburn Rovers did score the 10th most goals with 64.

The two teams have met in recent seasons. Just two years ago, Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic were competing in the EFL League One and the Championship prior to that. Blackburn Rovers are undefeated in seven of their last 10 games against Charlton Athletic.

The last time the two clubs played at Ewood Park, Blackburn Rovers came away with a 2-0 victory. Five of the last 10 matches between the two clubs ended with both teams scoring. Meanwhile, five of the 10 matches saw over 2.5 goals scored.

Blackburn Rovers do have injury issues with Derrick Williams, Sam Hart, Jacob Davenport and Dominic Samuel all set to miss the opener. Meanwhile, Charlton Athletic will be without Chuks Aneke and Lewis Page.

Charlton Athletic should struggle to get up to speed in the EFL Championship on opening day. Blackburn Rovers will get the victory to start their campaign with over 2.5 goals scored at Ewood Park.
