Leeds United will begin the 2019/20 Championship campaign as one of the favourites to top the table come the end of the season.

Having finished in 3rd place in the previous season, Leeds United lost out to Derby County in the playoff semi-final. They will be hoping they do not need the playoffs to win promotion this season.

However, standing in their way on the first weekend is Bristol City. The match will take place on Sunday 4th August and the hosts will be hoping to reach the playoffs this season.

Bristol City finished 8th last season, 4 points off the playoff places and were enjoying a decent preseason up until the final match against Crystal Palace. Bristol City lost the game 5-0 and that will come as a warning before the beginning of the new campaign.

Prior to the loss against Crystal Palace, Bristol City beat Hallen, AFC Wimbledon, Sarasota Metropolis and Forest Green Rovers. There was one additional defeat and that came against Derby County.

Trends show Bristol City struggled toward the end of the 2018/19 Championship season. They won only one of their final six matches and that put an end to their playoff hopes.  Home form was disappointing and Bristol City won just one of their last seven Championship games at Ashton Gate.

They lost three of those seven and both teams have scored in six of the last eight on home soil.

Leeds United have enjoyed a decent preseason, winning three of their five games and losing only one. The defeat came at the hands of Manchester United, so there was little shame in that loss and the wins were over York City, Guiseley and Western Sydney Wanderers. Their final preseason match came against Cagliari and ended in a 1-1 draw.

Much like their opponents in this game, Leeds United suffered towards the end of last season, winning only one of their final six Championship matches, including the playoffs. Away from home, Leeds United won four and lost three of their final seven games. The wins came against Bristol City, Reading, Preston North End and Derby County.

Leeds United conceded 5 goals in their last two regular Championship season away matches, 2 goals at Brentford and 3 goals at Ipswich Town.

Team news and Bristol City have added Tomas Kalas and Jay Dasilva from Chelsea this summer plus goalkeeper Daniel Bentley and all three could start this match. Central defender Adam Webster could be on the move to the Premier League and his loss would be a big blow.

Leeds United have retained the services of Jack Clarke for one more season despite selling him to Spurs. Helder Costa, who has joined on loan from Wolvers is expected to start in a wide right position. Mateusz Klich scored 10 goals from midfield last season and will be hoping to get on the score sheet.

This has the makings of being a tremendous game. Bristol City will have a big crowd behind them but the potential loss of Webster at this stage could set them back defensively.  Leeds United could come away with all 3 points in a game which both teams score.
