Flamengo to see off the threat of Botafogo

On Sunday night, Flamengo will put their title challenge to the test as they host Botafogo at the Maracana.

Flamengo are currently third place in the Brazilian Serie A, five points behind the two top teams Palmeiras and Santos. An unbeaten run of six league games has kept the home side in touch of the top two teams, though.

Their recent league games have been relatively closely fought and low scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in four of their last five Serie A outings.

One player who has been crucial in Flamengo’s decent campaign so far is loan star, Gabriel Barbosa. The 22-year-old has scored eight goals in nine Serie A appearances since making a move to the home side from Internazionale.

The team from Rio have been exceptionally strong on home soil of late, winning their last five league games, while scoring at least two goals in all five victories. Five of their last six home games in Serie A have also produced over 2.5 goals.

Botafogo are currently eighth place in the table, outside the Copa Libertadores qualifying spots by just a point. The visitors are also just four points behind the leagues top four, which would guarantee a place in the Copa Libertadores for next season.

The visitors are still well placed to launch a top-four challenge, despite failing to win in their last three Serie A games. Scoring goals has been the main problem for Botafogo, as the visitors have failed to score in all three goalless league matches.

Botafogo have been inconsistent on their travels in the Brazilian top-flight of late. However, a record of just two away wins in the league certainly will not help the visitors break into the top-four.
