BATE Borisov and Rosenborg clash in UCL second qualifying round first leg
3008
Belarussian champions BATE Borisov host Norwegian champions Rosenborg on Wednesday night at the Borisov Arena.
The hosts reached the playoff round of Champions League qualification last season before PSV Eindhoven dumped them out. BATE Borisov did continue on in the Europa League reaching the round of 32 where they famously defeated Arsenal at home.
Rosenborg have a long history in European competitions. Last season, they reached the second qualifying round where they were eliminated by Celtic. They did go on to play in the Europa League group stage.
The Norwegians made short work of Northern Irish club Linfield in the Champions League first qualifying round, 6-0, on aggregate. The tie was pretty much over after the first leg as Rosenborg won 2-0.
BATE Borisov narrowly got passed Poland’s Piast Gliwice, 3-2, on aggregate. After drawing at home 1-1, BATE Borisov went to Poland and snatched a 2-1 victory.
Rosenborg are in the middle of the Norwegian Eliteserien season. Fitness will be no worry for the reigning league champions when they take the pitch in Borisov. The black and white started the Eliteserien season slowly, but have come on strong in recent weeks.
The club has won five of their last six league games and currently sit nine points off of first place Molde. Rosenborg do lead the Eliteserien’s form table with 15 points from their last 18 possible.
BATE Borisov are also in the midst of their Belarussian Premier League season. The club is currently in second place just two points off of top team Dinamo Brest. BATE Borisov are on a summer break from the league and will not play domestically until August 10th.
The lack of game time could affect BATE Borisov. The good news for BATE Borisov is Rosenborg had the weekend off as well in Norway.
These sides both have experience playing in European competition and will expect to get into the Champions League third qualifying round.
BATE Borisov saw one of their first-round matches end with over 2.5 goals. Meanwhile, Rosenborg also saw a first-round match finish with over 2.5 goals scored.
Although both teams can score goals, Wednesday first leg should be a close affair with under 2.5 goals.
Looking back at both clubs’ first leg matches from the previous round, those fixtures saw under 2.5 goals tallied. That trend should continue as BATE Borisov and Rosenborg finish in a stalemate.
