The AFCON 2019 round of sixteen continues as hosts Egypt take on South Africa in Cairo on Saturday.

Egypt are the favorites to win the tournament and will be eager to add to their record seven titles in front of their home crowd this year.

South Africa’s one and only AFCON triumph came back in 1996 and they have not had much to shout about since then.

Bafana Bafana scraped through to the knockout stage after finishing as one of the group stage’s best third-placed teams.

They were beaten by Ivory Coast and Morocco however the three points they picked up against Namibia were enough to see them qualify.

South Africa finished Group D with a goal difference of –1 and can count themselves very lucky to have claimed a spot in the last sixteen.

On the other hand, Egypt finished top of Group A with maximum points from their three matches.

They scored five goals and kept three clean sheets and finished five points clear of second-placed Uganda.

The Pharaohs dominance has sent out a clear message to their rivals and they certainly mean business at this year’s tournament.

Star forward Mohamed Salah scored in the victories over DR Congo and Uganda and despite a long season with Liverpool, he is not showing any signs of a dip in form.

South Africa are not the force they once were and gone are the days of their players representing Europe’s top clubs.

Egypt come into the match on the back of five consecutive victories in all competitions. South Africa have managed just two wins in their last five matches.

Egypt and South Africa have met twice before in the AFCON and on both occasions, Egypt have come away with the victory. Significantly, the second of these meetings came in the final of the 1998 tournament.

Overall, South Africa have actually managed more head to head victories than Egypt. The current records stands at 6-4 in favor of Bafana Bafana.

Despite this record, it is unlikely that South Africa will add to their tally on Saturday. Egypt’s squad is far stronger and the home advantage will give The Pharaohs an added boost.

Forebet predicts a win for Egypt, with over 2.5 goals being scored in the process.
