Brazil vs Argentina is ranked as being one of sports greatest international rivalries.  The teams share a long and often turbulent history but they will come together once more in the 2019 Copa America.

We have reached the semi-final stage of the tournament and the players can almost touch the final.  We could not have asked for a bigger game at this stage of the competition and on the 2nd July Brazil will meet Argentina at the Estádio Mineirão, Belo Horizonte in a winner takes all match.

The atmosphere is sure to be crackling but will the game live up to the billing?

Brazil have not had things all their own way in the 2019 Copa America. They won their opening group game 3-0 against Bolivia but were then held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Venezuela.  However, they sealed their progress to the quarter-final stage with a thumping 5-0 win over Peru.

Another good win was expected against Paraguay in the quarter-final but once again Brazil failed to shine.  They were taken to a penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw, with Gabriel Jesus stroking home the winning spot kick.

Twice Brazil have scored 3 or more goals in the tournament but twice they have been prevented from scoring.  However, trends show they have been good in defence and Brazil have yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

We cannot say the same thing about Argentina, who struggled to get through the group stage.  They were drawn with Colombia, Paraguay and Qatar, which was never going to be easy and they slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Colombia in their opening match.

This was followed by a 1-1 draw with Paraguay and Argentina were on the brink of a shock exit in the group stage.  However, they defeated Qatar in the final match 2-0 to finish second in the group and play Venezuela in the quarter-final.

Argentina produced arguably their best performance in the tournament to win 2-0, although Lionel Messi was quiet for much of the game. Argentina have defeated Brazil just once in their last five attempts and that came in the 2017 Superclasico de las Americas.  Trends show they have failed to score a goal against Brazil in three of their last five meetings.

Looking ahead to the team news and Brazil are unlikely to make many changes from the starting XI against Paraguay.  Alex Sandro may come into the team at the expense of Filipe Luís at left-back and Willian is also pushing for a start.

Argentina are set to start with an attacking front three of Sergio Aguero, Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez, meaning Angel di Maria and Paulo Dybala will have to settle for a place on the bench.

This could be a very tense game, with neither team wanting to concede a goal as their main priority.  Brazil have the home advantage and the better recent record between the teams, meaning they could come through by a narrow one goal margin.
