The Europa League kicks off in earnest on Thursday night, with the preliminary rounds of the competition. Two teams hoping to make it to the next round of Europe’s secondary competition are Barry Town and Cliftonville Belfast, who face each other in the first leg of their tie at Jenner Park.

The British derby promises to be a relatively tight one, with both teams heading into the clash with high hopes of qualification.

Barry heads into this clash on the back of a poor run of form in the Welsh top-flight, as they failed to win in their last three outings. Cliftonville ended their campaign with two victories, but prior to the wins, their form had been slightly inconsistent.

One thing the pair have in common is poor results in the early stages of the Europa League in recent seasons. However, Barry Town’s history in the Europa League is just two games, which they lost against Portuguese side Boavista. Those games were way back in 2000, though, so not much can be read into those defeats.

Cliftonville have lost their last four games in the Europa League, exiting the competition at the early stages in 2016 and also last season. In fact, the Northern Irish team has won just three of their 17 matches in the Europa League.

The visitors have also never won an away game in the competition, picking up four draws and suffering five defeats in their nine matches on their travels in the Europa League. Their poor away form will be a concern, even heading into a clash with the competition new boys.

The fact they have also conceded at least two goals in six of their last nine away games in the Europa League shows how vulnerable they are on their travels against decent opposition.
