Bolivia face Peru at the Maracana on Tuesday in the first of the second-round matches at the 2019 Copa America.

Bolivia were beaten 3-0 by host nation Brazil in their first match whilst Peru claimed a point against Venezuela after a goalless draw in their opener.

Bolivia, who last won the title in 1963, managed to reach half-time against Brazil with the score at 0-0. They eventually crumbled in the second half and only registered one shot on target throughout the entire match.

Bolivia also managed just 26% of the possession in their opening match; underlining their inferiority.

Peru will feel they probably should have come away with all 3 points from their first match against Venezuela. Despite the 50/50 possession, Peru registered six more goal attempts.

They also played the last 15 minutes with a man advantage after Luis Mago was shown a second yellow card however Venezuelan goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez denied Peru the victory with a couple of stunning saves late on.

These results mean Peru sit 1 point above Bolivia after the first round of matches. With Brazil setting the early pace, both sides will be eager to claim the victory on Tuesday to keep their chances of quarter-final qualification alive.

Bolivia and Peru have met 50 times over the years, with their first meeting coming all the way back in 1927.

Overall, Peru have the bragging rights with 25 wins. Bolivia have managed just 13 wins and have failed to claim a victory in their last 7 meetings. There have been 12 draws between the two sides.

In their most recent Copa America meeting in 2015, a Paolo Guerrero hat-trick secured a 3-1 quarter-final victory for Peru.

This will surely be Guerrero’s last chance to play for his country at a major tournament. The legendary striker, now 35, will be desperate to ensure his team qualify from Group A.

Peru should have too much quality Bolivia. Whilst it’s likely to be a cagey and nervy affair, there is an evident gulf in class between the two teams and Peru will be expected to continue their dominance in this tie.
