Venezuela and Peru to finish in stalemate

Venezuela and Peru to finish in stalemate
3027

Venezuela and Peru will open their 2019 Copa America accounts when they come up against each other at the Arena do Gremio on Saturday.

Peru are two-time winners of the Copa America, claiming the Copa in 1939 and 1975. They have subsequently done very little in recent years following their earlier triumphs. 3rd place finishes in 2011 and 2015 are their most notable achievements over the past 4 decades.

They will be looking to build on their recent major tournament experience though, after competing at last year’s World Cup. This was the first time Peru have appeared at a World Cup since 1982.

Peru’s form since the World Cup has been questionable. They’ve claimed just 2 wins in 8 friendly international matches and lost to El Salvador, Costa Rica and Ecuador in that time. They will be hoping that experienced forwards Jefferson Farfan and Paolo Guerrero can turn this around.

Venezuela are the only team in Group A to have never won the Copa America. They finished 4th in the 2011 campaign after losing the 3rd place match 4-1 to Peru.

A surprising 3-1 victory over South American heavyweights Argentina earlier in the year will have given the squad a lot of confidence going into the tournament.

While some may argue that Argentina fielded a weakened side, 5-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi was just one of a number of high-profile names who played that day.

With 11 Premier League goals and 7 assists to his name last season, Venezuela have one of the continent’s most potent strikers in Saloman Rondon. If he can continue to produce the same level of quality in front of goal, his country will stand a decent chance of progressing further in the competition.

Peru have the far superior record in terms of the head-to-head history. The two teams have faced each other 34 times over the years, with Peru winning 20 of those matches.

In recent times, they faced each other twice when qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. Both matches ended in a 2-2 draw which suggests there isn’t much separating the two sides nowadays.

Both teams know a win in this match will significantly boost their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals. They will both be desperate to win this match knowing that they still have to play the tournament favorites Brazil.

With neither side wanting to lose this match, Forebet predicts a low scoring draw.
