Sao Paulo to edge Serie A rival Avai

Sao Paulo to edge Serie A rival Avai
2365

Sao Paulo travel to Florianopolis on Sunday to take on the Brazilian Serie A’s 19th place club Avai. Manager Cuca has led Sao Paulo to an impressive start to the 2019 season. Now, he will expect the Tricolor to pick up another victory over lowly Avai.

Manager Geninho needs his Avai squad to put in a big performance against Sao Paulo. The visitors sit in eighth place and are nine points better off.

Avai were promoted at the end of the 2018 Serie B season and thus far, have looked every bit like a newly promoted team. They have not claimed a victory after seven matches with their three points coming from three draws.

Geninho’s Avai are –5 in goal difference. Despite scoring four goals in seven matches, they have allowed just nine scores. If Avai can find goal scoring, they could emerge from relegation trouble thanks to their defence.

Sao Paulo will be licking their lips as they arrive at the Estadio da Ressacada. They are winless in their last three Serie A matches and will eye an easy victory on Sunday. Sao Paulo did pick up a 1-1 draw in their previous match against Cruzeiro.

Avai have picked up two draws at home. The two points account four two-thirds of their total tally, so Sao Paulo better be wary of Avai’s ability to get home result. The Tricolor have won twice in three road games in 2019. Cuca’s team did lose to Corinthians in their last road match, however.

Striker Alexander Pato leads the team with two goals in Serie A play. Meanwhile, former Lazio, Inter Milan and Juventus midfielder Hernanes has one goal in league play.

Avai’s league goals have all come from the same sources. Daniel Amorim, Brenner, and Feliciano Brizuela have combined to score all of Avai’s goals. If Geninho’s side want to get a point against the stars of Sao Paulo, they must find a way to score on Sunday.

Sao Paulo are a star-studded team compared to Avai. Pato, Hernanes, Bruno Peres, and Nene all had high-profile careers in Europe with famous clubs. Avai can be forgiven if they struggle against the mightier side.

Avai are winless against Sao Paulo in nine of their last 12 matches in all competitions. They have, however, played well despite winning just three times against Sao Paulo. Avai have never been beaten by Sao Paulo by more than a two-goal margin.

These two should play another close game on Sunday with Sao Paulo just edging Avai. Expect under 2.5 goals as Sao Paulo narrowly win.
