Ligue 1 Relegation Playoff First Leg

While the season may have ended for top-flight clubs in England, Italy, Germany and Spain, the French Ligue 1 campaign still has one matter to resolve.

The Ligue 1 relegation playoff is a two legged tie between the team who finished 18th in Ligue 1 and the team who came through the promotion playoffs in Ligue 2. Therefore, we have a meeting between Lens and Dijon, with the first leg taking place on Thursday 30th May at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

Lens finished in 5th place in Ligue 2 and needed to come through two games to reach this playoff. They were the lowest ranked team going into the playoffs but defeated Paris FC away on penalties before defeating Troyes away 2-1 after extra-time.

Those results mean Lens are undefeated in their last five games, winning four and drawing one. Trends show they have been tough to beat at home and Lens have lost only one of their last ten home matches.  There have been six wins in those ten games but only two in the last five.

Defence is their strength on home soil and Lens have kept six clean sheets in their last nine home Ligue 2 games. Goals have not been as easy to come by and they have failed to find the back of the net in three of their last five home matches.

Dijon won their final Ligue 1 game of the season as they defeated Toulouse 2-1 at home but it was not enough to catch the teams above them and they finished in the relegation playoff position.

Trends show they have won two of their last five matches and both wins have come at home. They defeated Strasbourg and Toulouse with both games ending in a 2-1 victory.  Dijon made a strong finish to the season by winning four and drawing one of their last eight matches but the damage had already been done.

Away form is poor and Dijon have lost seven of their last eight away Ligue 1 games. In fact, they have won only three of their last twenty-one on the road.  Scoring goals has been an issue and they have failed to find the back of the net in seven of their last eight away games.

Team news and Lens could be without three players for this game.  Aleksandar Radovanovic, Seif Touka and Achraf Bencharki are all set to miss the match.

Dijon are without the suspended Romain Amalfitano and injured Valentin Rosier.  The trio of Julio Tavares, Jules Keita and Mehdi Abeid are doubtful.

This could be a very tight game, with little in the way of goals. Lens are the team in form and look strong at home. Forebet predicts a win for the hosts and advantage for the second leg.
