Chelsea to continue Champions League push

Chelsea are on the verge of a return to the Premier League’s top four. However, the Blues must not slip up at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday as Brighton come to town. Brighton are in need of gaining points against the Blues. Chris Hughton’s Seagulls sit in 15th place, but only five points separate them with the bottom three.

Brighton have lost three of their last five league matches. The Seagulls will have one eye on Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final match at Wembley Stadium. Brighton will play Manchester City on the day, but they must not lose sight of Premier League survival.

Chelsea won at the weekend against Cardiff City, 2-1. The Blues needed a second-half fight back as Ruben Loftus-Cheek became the hero with a stoppage-time goal. Chelsea needed two goals in the final six minutes plus stoppage-time to down the relegation hardened Bluebirds.

Manager Maurizio Sarri could be a dead man walking. Rumours continue to swirl that he will be relieved of his duties in the summer. Sarri won’t be fazed by the speculation and will go into Wednesday’s fixture focused on winning all three points.

Chelsea have played Brighton three times since the latter’s promotion to the Premier League in 2017. The Blues have dominated Brighton winning all three games and posting a combined score of 8-1. Sarri will be confident the Blues can win at Stamford Bridge as they have recorded the league’s fourth best points total at home. Thirty-two of Chelsea’s 60 points have come at the Bridge. They are undefeated in their last five home games with three ending in wins.

Brighton have the fourth worst points total on the road. Just 11 of Brighton’s 33 points have been won on their travels. The Seagulls have not found the back of the net often with only 15 strikes coming on the road.

Neither side has scored a lot of goals over the course of their last six matches. Chelsea have tallied just seven goals in six games while Brighton have struck the old onion bag five times in six fixtures.

Brighton will hope to get through the fixture without sustaining injuries to key players. They have their hopes pinned to a FA Cup final at Wembley. Wednesday’s fixture against Chelsea comes at exactly the wrong time.

With Brighton focused on the cup, Chelsea should be able to run riot against the visitors. Chelsea should get their mojo back against Brighton and set them up for an exciting final stretch of the season. Chelsea will win with over 2.5 goals hitting the back of the net.
