Newcastle and Burnley Not out of Relegation Fight

Perhaps the most important match in terms of relegation in the Premier League on Tuesday night comes at St James’ Park.  Newcastle United and Burnley meet in a very important match and a win for either team would be a huge boost.

Newcastle United come into the match sitting in 15th place on 28 points. This leaves them just 4 points clear of the relegation zone and with plenty of work to do.  Burnley are 2 points better off than their opponents but they have also got to pick up points to remain safe this season.

Newcastle United were expected to defeat Huddersfield Town at home on the weekend and they eventually got the job done to win the game 2-0.  That result means Newcastle United have lost one of their last five Premier League matches and their form seems to have improved in recent weeks.

There have been wins over Cardiff City, Manchester City and Huddersfield Town plus a draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers.  The defeat came at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur away and Newcastle United came close to taking a point from that game.

Trends show Newcastle United have won each of their last three home Premier League games and have scored 2 or more goals in each of those three matches.  They also kept a clean sheet in two of those games and look to be in good shape when playing in-front of their own fans.

Burnley picked up a great 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend which moved them clear of the bottom three. It was a massive result and shows how things have turned around for Burnley in recent weeks.

Having struggled up until Christmas, Burnley have won six, drawn three and lost only one of their last ten games in all competitions.

Trends show they are on a run of eight consecutive undefeated matches in the Premier League and are undefeated in each of their last four on the road.  There have been wins at Huddersfield Town and Brighton and Hove Albion plus draws at Watford and Manchester United.

Trends show both teams have scored in four of their last five away Premier League games and Burnley have scored at least 2 goals in six of their last eight Premier League matches.

Team news and Newcastle United have Jonjo Shelvey back in training but it remains to be seen if he is considered for this game.  The midfielder is the only doubt for the home team.

Burnley are waiting on news of the fitness of Steven Defour who has been struggling with a calf injury and Aaron Lennon who has a knee problem.  However, they are likely to go with the same team which started the match against Spurs.

This is a vital game for both teams and it would not be a surprise to see a very tight game, with few goals being scored.  A draw and under 2.5 goals seems a likely outcome.
