Wigan Athletic v Ipswich Town - Match Preview
Next up is another relegation battle when Wigan Athletic play host to bottom club Ipswich Town at their DW Stadium on Saturday afternoon with the hosts coming into this clash looking to extend their unbeaten run to four matches in the Championship.
The Latics continue to keep their heads above water with manager, Paul Cook, deserving a lot of credit with getting the most out of a tight budget and a squad of unsung heroes as they’ve collected a 2-1 win over QPR along with picking up points in draws with Rotherham United and Stoke City in recent weeks.
Wigan sit in a lowly 20th place in the Championship and will no doubt be relieved to be returning to their familiar surroundings for this clash as eight of their nine league wins in the second tier have been registered at their DW Stadium so far.
A home record of W8 D4 L4 scored 19 goals, conceded 16 goals is one of the best records amongst the teams sitting in the bottom half of the Championship with the exception of Brentford, and having also disposed of Aston Villa 3-0 in mid-January, The Latics have won two of their last three at home.
Visitors Ipswich Town may have avoided defeat in their last two matches in the Championship following 1-1 draws with Derby County and Stoke City, but draws are no longer any good for Paul Lambert’s Ipswich side who sit rock bottom of the second tier and nine points adrift of safety.
The Tractor Boys are without a win for six matches which has seen the Suffolk outfit suffer defeats to Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday and most depressing of all, a heavy 3-0 loss to arch-rivals, Norwich City, who, to rub salt into Ipswich’s wounds, are top of the Championship.
Switching to results away from home, the story gets even worse for Ipswich who have lost their last seven away matches on the trot, and are without an away win for 10 matches on the road, with their last success being a 3-2 win at Swansea City back in early October (when former manager Paul Hurst was in charge - hmmm).
The visitors also possess the lowest goal-haul away from home in the Championship having failed to score in 11 of their 16 away matches this season, including six of their last seven matches on their travels.
Wigan are no world-beaters but it’s horses for courses here, and they should see off a very poor Ipswich Town outfit at the DW Stadium today.
