Espanyol host La Liga’s bottom club Huesca on Friday night at the RCDE Stadium. After a terrible run of form for Rubi’s team in November, December, and January, Espanyol have rebounded. The Catalan team is undefeated in its last three matches and six points above the relegation zone.

From early December to February, Espanyol dropped like a stone from the top half of the league and into the bottom half. Now, they are recovering and putting distance between themselves at the bottom three.

Life back in La Liga hasn’t been great for Huesca this season. Last year’s Segunda promotion winners have gained just 18 points from a possible 72. Their 1-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao a week ago ended a three-match unbeaten run. Huesca have 14 games to save their season and achieve La Liga safety. Amazingly, despite their poor points total, they are just six points off of safety.

Huesca won’t have it easy at the RCDE as Espanyol have won seven times in 11 games at home this term. Meanwhile, Huesca have managed just two away victories. They have lost eight times in 12 road games while compiling a dreadful –13-goal difference.

Manager Francisco Rodriguez’s team has scored just 23 goals, the second fewest in La Liga. Huesca’s defence hasn’t been much better allowing opponents to score 40 times. It is fourth most goals conceded in the league.

The two Spanish clubs haven’t met often in recent seasons. Their earlier game this term ended in an Espanyol 2-0 win. Espanyol have relied heavily on forward Borja Iglesias. The player has recorded 10 of Espanyol’s 27 goals. The last three games he has scored in, Espanyol have gained points. He will be counted on to find the back of the net once more this weekend.

Huesca’s leading goal scorer Ezequiel Avila has found the back of the net just four times. Ten other Huesca players have scored at least one goal. They do not have a central player to step up when goals are needed most. Huesca have been held scoreless 11 times this season. With their scoring woes and Espanyol’s previous victory over them, Friday night’s game is likely to end in another clean sheet loss.

Espanyol will pick up another victory over their relegation rivals. The fixture will see Espanyol win by another 2-0 scoreline. The win will move Espanyol further away from relegation danger. At the same time, it will doom Huesca further as they head back to the Segunda.
