Last season’s Champions League finalists, Liverpool, will take centre stage at Anfield again on Tuesday night as they host Bayern Munich in the Round of 16.

This is the first leg of the tie and Liverpool will be hoping to build a good lead to take with them to Germany.  Bayern Munich know they really need to score a goal to give themselves a good chance of progressing.

Liverpool were not in action on the weekend having already been eliminated from the FA Cup. That means Liverpool have had 10 days to prepare for this match.  Having suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League and FA Cup, Liverpool are undefeated in their last five matches, all of which were in the Premier League.

There have been wins over Crystal Palace and Bournemouth at home, Brighton and Hove Albion away plus draws with Leicester City at home and West Ham United away.

Liverpool have lost only one game at home all season and that was against Chelsea in the League Cup.  In the Champions League, trends show Liverpool are undefeated in their last ten at home and have won seven of their last eight.

They have won each of their three home games in the Champions league this season and have kept a clean sheet in six of their last eight at Anfield.

Bayern Munich recovered from the concession of an early goal to defeat Augsburg 3-2 away from home in the Bundesliga on Friday night. That results means they have won each of their last three games in all competitions and have lost just one of their last fifteen.

In fact, Bayern Munich are on a good run in terms of wins and they have won eight of their last nine matches in all competitions.  Away from home Bayern Munich have lost only one of their last eight in all competitions.

Trends show Bayern Munich are unbeaten in fifteen of their last sixteen Champions league matches.  The German champions are undefeated in each of their last eight on the road and have scored 2 or more goals in each of those eight games.  However, they have kept just two clean sheets over the same period of time and that will be a concern.

Looking ahead to the team news and Liverpool could have problems in defence.  Virgil van Dijk is suspended and there are doubts over the fitness of Dejan Lovren.  That could mean a central defensive partnership of Joel Matip and Fabinho.

Bayern Munich are without the suspended Thomas Muller plus the injured duo of Corentin Tolisso and Arjen Robben.  Kingsley Coman should be fit to start after picking up a knock on the weekend but Jerome Boateng and Franck Ribery have not travelled.

Liverpool’s problems at the back could see Bayern Munich get an away goal but with their front three fresh, Liverpool will be expecting to score goals.  This should be a great game and we could see a home win with both teams scoring.
