Birmingham City v Bolton Wanderers - Match Preview
Birmingham City won a seven-goal thriller at Loftus Road on Saturday afternoon against QPR, eventually holding on to take all three points in a 4-3 win despite being 4-0 up, as well as goalkeeper Lee Camp saving a penalty to deny the hosts a point in the closing stages of the match.
Birmingham now return to St Andrews for Tuesday night’s clash with Championship strugglers, Bolton Wanderers with the hosts sitting in 8th place and four points behind the play-off pack.
Against the backdrop of a transfer embargo and financial restrictions, it’s been a successful campaign for Garry Monk’s side and having recently recorded back-to-back wins over Nottingham Forest and QPR, Monk will be looking for The Blues to kick on in this encounter.
Birmingham are unbeaten in their last three matches, while at home Birmingham have suffered just two defeats all season and have kept six clean sheets to date at St Andrews too.
The hosts were also able to keep hold of their leading goalscorer, Che Adams (19 goals) during the January transfer window despite great interest from a few Premier League clubs and he’s scored 9 goals in his last 10 matches in all competitions, including a first half hat-trick against QPR on Saturday.
Although Bolton Wanderers were handed a fifth defeat in six matches in the Championship on Saturday when they lost 2-1 to fellow Lancastrians, Preston North End, the visitors are still only four points adrift of safety as they make their way to the west midlands to face Birmingham City on Tuesday night.
However, with just one league win from their last 21 matches in the Championship, the writing appears to be very much on the wall for The Trotters who have had to endure a wretched campaign and uncertainty regarding the ownership of the club which certainly hasn’t helped their cause.
Bolton’s results away from home though have been particularly woeful as they’ve lost their last six matches on the trot with defeats at Sheffield Wednesday, Norwich City, Brentford, Hull City, Bristol City and Sheffield United, which has seen Bolton concede a total of 15 goals and have scored just 3 in reply.
Indeed, Bolton have now gone 13 away matches without a win, with their last success being a 1-0 win away at third from bottom club, Reading, back in August of last year.
Therefore, anything other than a Birmingham City win on Tuesday night would be a big surprise.
