Leeds Hope to Return to Winning Ways in FA Cup

The FA Cup third round is one of the best days in the English football calendar.  Smaller clubs often have the opportunity to try their luck against Premier League opponents but you also get to see teams from the same division battle it out.

That’s the case in this FA Cup third round tie between Queens Park Rangers and Leeds United.  Both teams are battling to win promotion to the Premier League from the Championship this season but will need to switch their attention to the cup this weekend.

QPR will be feeling good about themselves heading into this game as they picked up a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa in the Championship last time out. It was a good result and made up a little for the disappointing 0-0 draw at home with Reading in their previous game.

Trends show QPR are undefeated in their last five games in the Championship, having won three and drawn two matches.  Having lost two games at the beginning of December, QPR did well to turn things around across the festive period and they will be feeling good about their chances coming into this match.

QPR have lost just one of their last eight matches on home soil and have picked up wins over Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Brentford, Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town.  The Hoops have scored 2 or more goals in four of their last five at Loftus Road.

Leeds United will be hoping to use the FA Cup to get back to winning ways having lost each of their last two matches in the Championship. Despite going down 2-0 at home to Hull City and 4-2 at Nottingham Forest, Marco Bielsa’s team remain at the top of the Championship table and look on course to win promotion.

Away form shows Leeds United have been tough to beat this season.  They have lost just three of their thirteen away matches but two of those defeats have come in the last five games.  Trends show Leeds United like to score goals and they have found the back of the net in each of their thirteen away matches this season.

However, Leeds United have also conceded 6 goals across their last two away fixtures and will want to improve defensively in this game.

Looking ahead to the team news and QPR are without Massimo Luongo who is away on international duty.  Tomer Hemed, Angel Rangel and Geoff Cameron are missing through injury while Olamide Shodipo will be assessed before the match.

Leeds United will be without the suspended Kalvin Phillips following his red card.  Isaiah Brown, Stuart Dallas, Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi are all on the treatment table and will miss out.

It will be interesting to see how both managers approach this game and if they select full strength teams.  Leeds United want to get back to winning ways but it will be tough against a good QPR team and this one could end level.
