Huge Game for Both Ends of the Table in Cardiff

Huge Game for Both Ends of the Table in Cardiff

The final Premier League match of the New Years Day fixtures sees Tottenham Hotspur travel to South Wales to play Cardiff City.

This match has huge implications at both ends of the table as Cardiff City aim to move clear of the relegation zone while Tottenham Hotspur hope to maintain their push for the title.  A win for Cardiff City could move them 7 points clear of the relegation zone, which would be a huge boost.

Tottenham Hotspur know they must win, with Manchester City and Liverpool playing each other later in the week.

Cardiff City have found a little bit of form over the festive period and have picked up 4 points from their last two games, both of which have been away from home.  Having struggled badly on their travels this season, it came as a shock to see Cardiff City defeat Leicester City 1-0 away from home on Saturday.

That result followed a good 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace and Cardiff City will be feeling much better about their chances of survival this season.

Trends show Cardiff City have been good at home in recent Premier League matches and have won three of their last four. There have been victories over Brighton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton.

However, the 5-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in their most recent Premier League home game will serve as a reminder of how good the top teams can be on their day.

Tottenham Hotspur need to get back to winning ways if they are to push for the title this season.  Mauricio Pochettino’s men slumped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wembley on Saturday and that was a game they were expected to win.

The result came as such a surprise considering Tottenham Hotspur were on a great run of six wins and a draw in all competitions, with the draw coming at Barcelona in the Champions League.  Trends show Tottenham Hotspur have won five of their last six Premier League matches and have been very good away from home.

Spurs have won seven of their last eight away Premier League games, scoring 2 or more goals in four of the last five.

Looking ahead to the team news and Cardiff City are still without the injured Kenneth Zahore and that means Callum Paterson is set to continue up-front for this game.  Daniel Ward and Jazz Richards are both close to a return.

Tottenham Hotspur may need to freshen things up as they conceded 3 goals in the last 15 minutes on Saturday.  Lucas Moura, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker-Peters, Juan Foyth and Oliver Skipp will be hoping to start the game.  Erik Lamela, Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier, Serge Aurier, Victor Wanyama, Moussa Dembele and Vincent Janssen are all injured.

Cardiff City will be buoyed by their recent results and the crowd will be fully behind the home team.  However, Tottenham Hotspur have been excellent away from home this season and should have the firepower to win the match.
