Werder Bremen Look to Recover at Freiburg

Werder Bremen Look to Recover at Freiburg

There are two Bundesliga matches to look forward to on Sunday afternoon with the first coming at the Schwarzwald Stadion as Freiburg host Werder Bremen.

Freiburg find themselves at the top of the bottom half of the table and know a win could see them move up as far as 8th if other results go their way.  However, just to move into the top half would be considered a good result.

Werder Bremen have been suffering of late yet still find themselves in 7th place in the league.  If they can win this match there is a chance, they could go level on points with Bayern Munich, if the champions were to lose their match.

Freiburg come into this match on the back of a disappointing 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Mainz. Having held Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw in their previous game at the Allianz Arena, hopes were high Freiburg could take maximum points but it wasn’t to be.

Having suffered a 2-1 defeat Holstein Kiel in the German Cup, Freiburg have failed to win any of their last three competitive games.  However, trends show they are difficult to beat in the Bundesliga and Freiburg have lost just one of their last five matches.  Unfortunately, only one of those games has ended in a win and Freiburg have won just one in their last seven in all competitions.

Both teams have scored in three of their last five home Bundesliga games.

Werder Bremen have been in poor form and will be aiming to recover with a win in this match. They have lost each of their last three Bundesliga games suffering a heavy home defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen before going down 2-1 at Mainz and 3-1 at home against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Away form shows a mixed bag of results and Werder Bremen have won three and lost two of their five away league games this season.  Two of those defeats have some in their last three away matches and Werder Bremen have seen both teams score in twelve of their last fourteen matches in all competitions.

A clean sheet seems out of the question for Werder Bremen in this match but they have found the back of the net in all five of their away Bundesliga games this season.

Team news and Freiburg have an extensive injury list and Christian Streich could turn to a back three with Philipp Lienhart coming into central defence.  Nils Petersen may return form injury to start the match up-front.

Werder Bremen travel without Fin Bartels, Aron Johannssson, Philipp Bargfrede and Stefanos Kapino.  Nuri Sahin could start in central midfield with Martin Harnik, Florian Kainz and Milot Rashica battling for a place in the wide positions.

This match could see both teams finding the back of the net as they search for a crucial 3 points.  However, if Werder Bremen can play to the potential they showed earlier in the campaign, they could come away with the win.
