RB Leipzig to continue unbeaten run

RB Leipzig to continue unbeaten run

RB Leipzig host Stuttgart on Wednesday night at the Red Bull Arena.

Ralf Rangnick’s side are unbeaten in their last three matches in the Bundesliga. Leipzig escaped Frankfurt on Sunday with a 1-1 draw thanks to an offside call that disallowed an Eintracht goal late in the game. They will now hope their luck continues with Stuttgart’s visit.

While Leipzig got a little luck over the weekend, but Stuttgart have had nothing go their way all season. Stuttgart are yet to win in the Bundesliga and sit second from bottom in the table. The good news for Tayfun Korkut’s team is it has managed to draw two consecutive games. Stuttgart go into the midweek fixture having drawn at the weekend with newly promoted Fortuna Dusseldorf. Right now, Stuttgart are showing relegation form and a fight for survival looks on the cards.

The two clubs have only met twice in their histories. Those meetings came last season with Leipzig getting the best of Stuttgart on both occasions. Leipzig won their meeting at the Red Bull Arena before drawing nil-nil in the away fixture in Stuttgart. Their home win was by narrow margins as Leipzig took all three points, 1-0.

Rangnick’s Leipzig are far different than the raging Red Bull fans have seen over the last two seasons. The team is missing a spark and player execution has been poor. The sale of Naby Keita has hurt Leipzig far more than expected. They are missing a midfielder that can go box to box for 90 minutes. Leipzig have scored six goals while allowing eight this term. All four matches this season have seen Leipzig and their opponents score. Each match has seen two or more goals scored.

Stuttgart have had their own problems putting the ball in the back of the net. The team has scored just three goals while conceding seven. Stuttgart’s three goals came all in the same fixture against Freiburg with the game finishing 3-3. Stuttgart have been held to three clean sheets in four games and going up against Leipzig, despite Red Bull’s defensive problems, all signs point to another scoreless night of football. Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez has tallied 10 goals in 20 league games since returning to Stuttgart last January. Eight of those 10 strikes have come in away fixtures.

Leipzig have had their worst start in club history this season at any level. Rangnick has tried to rotate the team early on to keep players fresh for both the Bundesliga and Europa League matches. It hasn’t worked and he claims the heavy rotation will end on Wednesday night as Rangnick is looking for stability. He will have the previously injured duo of Nordi Mukiele and Jean-Kevin Augustin back for selection.

Despite struggling for consistency, Leipzig will pick up all three points and get their season rolling. Rangnick’s team should then push on for a European place for the rest of the season.
